Concept Art: Kamiko's Lolita Fashion

Lolita Fashion Concept Art

Starting today and each Wednesday until September I'll be showing off concept art for This Mortal Coil: The Rabbit and the Moon.

The first page is a character turnaround for Kamiko. The important thing here I was trying to work on was Kamiko's Lolita fashion.

I love the fashion design ever since I saw it in Kamikaze Girls, and when I created Kamiko I began to gravitate towards drawing her wearing Lolita. When I imagine her character, one of my shorthand descriptors for her is a "female Doctor Who" and like the Doctor she's got her own flamboyant fashion sense. Here's a nice rendition of her comic book outfit:

Lolita Fashion #6: The Rabbit and the Moon

Lolita is very detailed clothing -- lots of ruffles, lace, and print patterns. To take on the challenge of drawing that style and also doing it in high contrast meant I had to find a way to make it sane. The dress I created for The Rabbit and the Moon was meant to be a simplified Lolita version. It has some of the main aspects: the silhouette with the bell shaped dress and a hair piece (the rose in this case). You usually see Lolitas wearing mary jane style shoes, and I before I started the comic I realized I had the wrong strap style. Lolita shoes don't generally seem to be heels like this, but I like drawing heels so I kept them.

Kamiko also begins the story with a parasol, which conceals a sword, and over the course of the story she loses the parasol part of it. Do you remember what she did with it? :) I won't link you since it's particularly gruesome, and if you want to find out, read back through the comic. Oooh, okay, what the heck. I warned you...here's the page.

Since I drew this back in 2013, I've draw quite a lot of Lolita fashion for Kamiko and this website. I wanted to explore her wearing different styles and to figure out something that was more Lolita appropriate for her next story. When I look at all the different Lolita styles and attempt to strike the balance between drawing something that resembles the fashion while keeping it somewhat sane to draw on page, Classical Lolita seemed to fit the bill perfectly. It's more mature with it's muted colors and it's simpler design -- okay, except when you get to some of the wallpaper prints.

Classical Lolita Drawings

Here are a few other drawings of Kamiko in classical Lolita. I'll definitely be using these in future episodes of This Mortal Coil:

I also have a vast Pinterest Pinboard with various types of Lolita fashion styles. I tend to like the classical, military, and sailor styles since are easier looking to draw while maintaining the aesthetic. Feel free to follow me there as I update that with pretty much anything I find on Pinterest that's Lolita related (or that might look good on Kamiko).
